The crucible was my first project with South London Theatre where I took a leading role as a costume supervisor. Having been a member of the theatre for serveral previous productions, i knew my way around the collection and was confident I could produce a wardrobe that matched the directors vision and matched the serious tones of the play. At this point, a majority of my previous work was very upbeat and colourful, so making the shift to dark, melancholic costuming was a different experience. The narrative itself portraying on the Salem witch trials, is a story that is strongly rooted in hysteria, religion and control. In costuming, it was important the costumes, despite being all dark colours, didn't appear villainous, as part of the story, is the debate of who truly is the antagonist. The costuming had no time period, despite the plays original 1692 setting, so designing also became the challenge of saying away from period specific pieces without falling into the realm of fantasy.
